Pharmacology and Toxicology (FLK_044)
About Study Course
Objective
To extend and provide knowledge of:
1) the basic practical pharmacology and clinical pharmacology in line with learning about pathologies and diseases of the organ systems in the study process,
2) the mechanisms of action of different groups of medicines and their use in treatment of diseases, interactions between medicines and side effects,
3) the impact of medicines used on the mechanisms and pathogenesis of the disease, prescribing the most appropriate medication for the individual patient in a customized dosage scheme and evaluating the risks and benefits of treatment,
4) on how to recognize drug poisoning, recognize their initial characteristics, and provide knowledge on the treatment of drug intoxication,
5) the epidemiology of acute and chronic exogenous intoxication, toxicometric parameters, toxicodynamics symptoms of certain types of poisoning and recommended basic principles of treatment.
Prerequisites
Anatomy, physiology, pathological physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, introduction to clinical medicine and symptoms of diseases.
Learning outcomes
After successful fulfilment of the requirements of the study course, students will have acquired knowledge that will allow them to: describe a therapeutic formula; demonstrate basic theoretical knowledge and competence in general and special pharmacology; describe preparations of pharmacological groups, formulate their mechanisms of action, indications and contraindications, as well as side effects; describe pharmacotherapeutic groups. Students will have basic knowledge of poisoning and overdose of drugs, the toxicometric parameters of agents in the body, the specific toxic action, manifestations, diagnosis, treatment options; knowledge of epidemiology of acute and chronic exogenous intoxication, toxicokinetics, toxicodinamics, symptomatic symptoms of certain types of poisoning, recommended treatment principles and antidotes.
As a result of mastering the course, students will be able to explain the mode of action of specific medicines, anticipate side effects, as well as explain the effect of medicines used in the clinic on the mechanisms and pathogenesis of diseases, select the most suitable medicine in a specific situation and evaluate risks and benefits of treatment. As a result of mastering the toxicology course students will be able to identify the respective toxic agent, to determine the toxicometric parameters of medicines in the body and on the basis of which to predict the course and severity of overdose of the medicinal product, identify acute and chronic diseases caused by them, define conditions for safe use and how to avoid poisoning. Recognize paraclinical and clinical signs of poisoning, from symptoms over time to major clinical syndrome.
As a result of mastering the study course students will be able to select the most suitable medicines according to the situation, to prescribe relevant pharmacotherapy, to justify their choice in prescribing the specific medicine; based on evidence-based medical data, to evaluate the link of drug treatment with age, gender and comorbidities, choice of medicines and to evaluate the risk-benefit ratio; to independently obtain, select and analyse information on medicines, their use in the therapeutic process. Will be able to use the obtained competence on acute exogenic intoxication risk factors, epidemiology, on the scope of immediate medical aid to an acute toxicological patient. Will be able to show in practice a scientific approach to resolution of topical issues, and to find the necessary information in specific literature.
