About Study Course
Objective
1. To provide knowledge of the basic general pharmacology.
2. To acquire knowledge of the mechanisms of action of different groups of medicines and their application in the treatment of diseases.
3. To promote knowledge acquisition about the principles of rational pharmacotherapy.
4. To gain knowledge of the impact of drugs on disease mechanisms and pathogenesis, and how to assess the risks and benefits of treatment.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, introduction to clinical medicine and disease symptomatology. Knowledge of the official language.
Learning outcomes
Basic knowledge of modern stages of the discovery and development process of new medicinal substances, methods used in the development of new medicinal substances, main groups of pharmacological agents and medications in them, mechanisms of action, undesirable side effects.
As a result of the study course, students will acquire the skills to obtain objective information about medicines, will be knowledgeable about the mechanisms of action of different groups of medicines, will be able to navigate the processes of different stages of drug development, evaluating their management and economic aspects.
Understanding of the modern process of discovering new medicinal substances, its costs and the current situation in Latvia and internationally.
They will be familiar with different drug groups, mechanisms of activity, and will be knowledgeable about the special literature.
