Physiotherapy in Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, Geriatrics (REK_060)
About Study Course
Objective
To acquaint with the role of physiotherapy technologies in the treatment of internal diseases, the reduction of disease risks and recurrence, the strengthening of physical health, the primary and secondary prevention of diseases, the improvement of the body’s functional abilities in case of chronic diseases and functional impairments cause by them, as well as the improvement of quality of life.
Prerequisites
In anatomy, physiology, pathological physiology and internal diseases.
Learning outcomes
As a result of completing the course, students gain knowledge about the effects of physiotherapy techniques on the body’s functional abilities: restoring and strengthening the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, improving joint mobility, principles of postoperative activation, exercise dosing in cardiac patients, changes in the body due to ageing.
As a result of completing the study course, students will be able:
• to evaluate the state of health and functional status of patients: determine the body mass index;
• to measure the functional indicators of lungs: vital capacity, chest excursions, breathing type;
• to measure the patient’s pulse, breathing rate, blood pressure and use the readings for physical exercise dosing in bed-confined, ward and free movement modes;
• to determine endurance with a 6-minute walk test, analyse the results;
• to calculate and apply the training pulse rate for exercise dosing in cardiac patients;
• to recognise cardiological risks, contraindications to physiotherapy;
• to formulate the patient’s main problem;
• to set treatment objectives and draw up an appropriate physiotherapy programme;
• to assess the risk factors of heart diseases;
• to practice patient education about disease risk factors and disease prevention;
• to analyse recovery responses after exercise.
Analysis and synthesis: As a result of the studies, the student will be able to assess and classify risk factors for heart disease, develop a risk factor modification and physiotherapy plan, be able to discuss and draw conclusions on further measures for the prevention of recurrent disease, rehabilitation options and application thereof.
Evaluation: As a result of the studies, the student will be able to justify the modification of risk factors of cardiological diseases and the choice of treatment measures, recommend preventive physiotherapy techniques; be able to assess the patient’s condition, environmental situation and reasonably choose appropriate physiotherapy techniques.
