Objective

Aim of the placement: to give students an opportunity to strengthen theoretical knowledge, to acquire competence appropriate to the study programme, and to acquire practical skills necessary for specialists in the respective field.

Prerequisites

Microbiology, environmental health, infectious diseases and epidemiology, food safety systems, food and nutrition.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Will know about food chain and monitoring policies in Latvia:
National food chain monitoring;
The tasks and objectives of the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD);
The structure and functions of the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD).

Skills

Practical participation of the student in inspections of food businesses:
Food surveillance monitoring activities (carrying out and documenting inspections, evaluating HACCP/self-control documentation, participating in laboratory tests);
Skills in entering survey protocols into the PVD database.

Competence

Will be able to explain the National Food Chain Monitoring Programme:
Legislative requirements in the food chain;
Procedures, instructions, decrees of the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD);
Will be able to interpret the results and make the necessary recommendations in the field of food safety and monitoring.
