About Study Course
Objective
- Promote students’ skills and abilities to select information, analyse already written documents and draft legal texts thus acquiring the basics for drafting legal texts, including development of creative techniques for drafting legal texts (at the same time broadening knowledge in legal terminology), to express their own opinion in correct Latvian in a clear, simple and reasoned manner and comply with the requirements of record-keeping; to enhance and broaden understanding of practical application of legislation and documents, focusing on the most common mistakes in lawyers’ speeches and articles.
- Acquire skills and abilities to make a persuasive and effective presentation, as well as to evaluate the public speech and a written text of another person. - Develop skills to present information accurately, concisely, convincingly and reasonably, using available materials.
- As far as possible, discover weak points in own rhetoric and presentation skills and improve the contact with the audience (customer).
Prerequisites
Skills and ability to use the literary language, perception and knowledge of the most topical issues in the standards of the language, understanding of juridical science, legal texts and work with documents and terminology; prior knowledge of logic and psychology.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the study course students understand the nature and role of professional rhetoric.
On completion of the study course, students will understand basic principles of modern rhetoric and will have acquired practical skills in establishing communication and will be able to choose the most appropriate rhetorical techniques, such as repetition of words, use of synonyms, dialectisms, jargon, unfinished sentences, silence, changes in word order, etc., the standard language (the use of language resources in accordance with the standard of literary language), speech techniques (such as, voice, intonation, elocution, articulation, volume, range, tone, breathing, gestures, facial expression), that is, the means in order to maximise the impact on the audience.
Able to apply the interaction between the form of speech and the content of speech;
Capable of creating and presenting a speech correctly;
Knows and applies the methods of practical rhetoric: holding the attention of the audience and overcoming the communication barriers and stage fever;
Able to do self-analysis of the speech.
Analyse and evaluate the relevance of speeches to the principles of a good speech, the presence/absence of errors in them, the context of these speeches, as well as to independently write and present a speech that complies with all the above mentioned criteria and is based on the understanding of the interaction between the content and form of the speech.
