Objective

To acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the etiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of pulp and apical periodontal tissue diseases.

Prerequisites

Oral anatomy, oral histology, dental embryology, pulp histology, physiology, oral microbiology, immunology, radiology, dental hard tissue pathology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After obtaining of the content of the study course students will have a detailed knowledge of the prevention, etiology, pathology, clinical presentation and treatment options for diseases affecting the pulp and periradicular tissue. Will be able to perform the diagnosis of endodontic pathology. Will have the knowledge of the differential diagnosis of oro-facial pain. Will understand the microbiology and immunology of pulpal and periapical disease, relation to the general health. Will understand biomaterials science and medicaments in relation to endodontics. Will have knowledge of the indications for apical surgery and complicated root canal treatment and for referral to an endodontic specialist. Will be able to evaluate the outcome and prognosis of the root canal treatment.

Skills

The undergraduate will be able to use and to interpret basic diagnostic tests. Will be able to use rubber dam and additional isolation methods. Will be able to use rubber dam and additional isolation methods. Will be able to provide good dental anesthesia and supplemental anesthesia methods. Undergraduate will be able to perform primary root canal treatment in satisfactory quality on non-complicated teeth and to provide first aid in the case of symptomatic endodontic pathology.

Competence

Students acquire competence in endodontics according to the regulations of the general dentist specialty. Competence to diagnose endodontic disease, make decisions and choose treatment methods that are in accordance with existing treatment methods in dentistry.
