Objective

To examine students' theoretical and practical knowledge of the study programme "Dental Hygienist" in the course "Prevention of Dental Diseases" "Periodontology" and "Practice in Clinical Environment".

Prerequisites

Successfully acquired theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in study course "Periodontology-Preclinic and Clinic", "Practice in Clinical Environment", "Periodontology", "Cariology", "Dental Roentgology", "Public Health Care and Prevention in Dentistry".

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Passed the exam in Prevention of Dental Diseases and Periodontology, students will have the knowledge: • to describe caries and other illness recording methods using different indices for diagnosing oral diseases at different stages; • to present epidemiological data on oral diseases in Latvia and the World, understand their relation with various risk factors; • to explain the role of caries risk detection and metodology at an individual and population level; • to identify existing evidence-based prevention methods, to be able to evaluate information of new prevention methods; • about Fluoride Guidelines in Latvia; • of oral care products and their use in all population age groups; • to critically evaluate information published in the literature of new methods in caries classification, recording and other oral diseases; • to name and characterise the principles of evidence-based dentistry, their application at an individual, group and population level; • to recognise the clinical features of periodontum, functions and diseases, as well as their relation to occlusion specificities, dental and systemic diseases; • to assess the interconnections between disease diagnosis, the choice of treatment methods and their use in clinical practice; • of the instruments and materials used in the treatment of periodontal diseases, their types and applications; • of sharpening instruments.

Skills

Passed the exam in Prevention of Dental Diseases, students will be able to: • explain the acquired data on the general health of the patient, social factors, students will also be able to analyse the patient's eating habits and their relation to oral health, the history of fluoride use and the Latvian Fluoride Guidelines and oral hygiene practices developed in Latvia, as well as to identify the gaps in patient's knowledge; • outline the patient's caries risk assessment results by providing individual recommendations for risk reduction; • evaluate the stages and activity of the caries process; • to evaluate morphology of individual tooth fissures and to evaluate the necessity of silants; • collect medical history, observe ergonomics and infection control (Patient card, information on oral care habits, observance of ergonomics, analysis of eating habits, observation of infection control, treatment of the patient, examination of TMJ); • make a full periodontal examination by selecting appropriate instruments (evaluation of bleeding gums, diagnostic of tartar, diagnostic of periodontal pockets, diagnostic of BPE index, selection of D/C instruments, application, sharpening, selection of planned manipulation according to the situation, recessions, anatomy); • to perform evaluation of caries and other hard tissue pathologies (caries detection-hypodiagnostics, hyperdiagnostics, hard tissue pathologies, diagnostic localization of fillings, application of KPE index); • recommend and show appropriate oral care products to improve oral health for a particular patient (Tooth brushing techniques, toothbrushes, interdental care products, toothpastes, visit intervals, additional oral care products).

Competence

As a result of successfully passing the theoretical and practical final exam in Prevention of dental diseases and Periodontology, students are able to apply theoretical and practical knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of patients' oral cavity diseases, are able to apply evidence-based methods and acquired knowledge in the both individually and at the population level in accordance with the assigned qualification level and professional standard.
