Objective

To provide students with the opportunity to gain knowledge about social determinants of health; to promote perception about the interrelationship of social environment and health outcomes; to promote the ability to identify the role of social determinants in the formation of various health outcomes and to find possible solutions.

Prerequisites

Basics of economics, sociology, psychology, physiology, internal diseases, nutrition, public health.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Define social medicine and describe its scope and interests, name social determinants of health (SDoH) and describe SDoH, recognise SDoH in different examples of health-related behavior.
State the history of social medicine and express an opinion about current necessity of social medicine.

Skills

Explain SDoH role in the context of some public health problems, evaluate social factor assistance in disease incidence and prevalence, provide examples of social factors influencing different health outcomes, use appropriate terminology.

Competence

Evaluate and argue on the role of SDoH in given examples. Formulate and elaborate a problem solving mechanism by using main theoretical and practical concepts of social medicine.
