Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Individual laboratory experiments, problem solving, preparation, presentation and defence of literature research on specific drug substance. Individual work with home tasks, laboratory work protocol processing, studying of lecture materials. It is recommended to fill in the study course survey, evaluating the existing course content and creating proposals for updating the course. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | 1. Knowledge evaluation during practical sessions – discussions, seminars, colloquia, evaluation of results of experimental work; 2. Application of theoretical knowledge in practical tasks; 3. Assessment of student's attitude (activity in seminars, ability to improve knowledge, ability to work in a team explaining to others, attendance); 4. Analysis of unknown substance at the end of semester 3, performing various reactions and drawing conclusions on the presence of functional groups in the molecule; 5. Semester test at the end of the 2nd semester; 6. Written examination at the end of the 3rd semester. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | On successful course completion students will: • identify functional groups of organic compounds and explain their properties and possibilities of mutual conversions; • interpret relations of special structures of molecules with their properties; • identify structures of heterocyclic compounds and their properties; • interpret reactions of organic compounds on the bases of the main principles of reaction mechanisms. | ||||||||
Skills: | On successful course completion students will: • recognize functional groups in drug molecules, name them, know the chemical properties and identification reactions of the group; • select and apply correct methods for isolation and purification of organic compounds; • evaluate chemical structures of drug substances in connection with their pharmacological actions. | ||||||||
Competencies: | On successful course completion students will choose and interpret chemical and physical methods of identification and functional analysis of organic compounds. | ||||||||
