Preliminary Knowledge:
Introduction to Civil Law, Property Law.
Objective:
Ensure that students acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and competence in the field of Family Law. To develop an understanding about the family law institute in Latvia and Family Law as part of the Civil Law and other related legislation, as well as to introduce the jurisprudence in the field of Family Law and its practical application in solving family legal issues.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Independent work with family law, case law and legal literature; preparing a report on the chosen topic in the field of family law, case studies and drafting documents. 1) clarification of terms; 2) analysis of the case-law; 3) drawing up contracts; 4) the settlement of cases; 5) the preparation of the final work. Students are informed verbally and on the studio's website about the number of independent works, deadlines and conditions of completion. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.
Assessment Criteria:
Students’ knowledge will be assessed according to the 10-point grading system. Upon conclusion of the course the student gets separate assessment on: 1) Examination work; 2) Final evaluation (consists of an examination mark (it is the determining mark) and the assessment received for various course activities the student has been involved in during the course). The student activities are related to: • participation in classes and the quality of answers during the practical classes; • oral/written analysis of independent practical assignments; • assessment for tests; • the quality of the final practical assignment, etc.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:On successful course completion students are capable to demonstrate basic and specialised knowledge and critical understanding of the role of family law in a democratic state, institutions of family law; they have developed scientific research skills and the ability to apply the existing legislation of family law in practice.
Skills:On successful course completion students are able to: • demonstrate a scientific approach to solving problems; • outline their learning independently; • make decisions and find creative solutions in changing or uncertain circumstances; • take responsibility and initiative by doing the work individually, in a team or by managing other people's work; • direct further learning and professional development of themselves and their subordinates. Upon completion of the course students will have developed skills of analysing, synthesising and evaluating basic principles of family law; mutual relationships between spouses, parents and children and relatives; the role, importance and competence of the orphan’s courts and other state institutions in handling legal issues related to the family, etc. They will have a grasp of the family law system and will be able to analyse the actual circumstances in the field of the family law by applying the relevant provisions of the family law.
Competencies:On successful course completion students: • are able to assess the environmental and societal impacts of their professional activities; • can show their understanding of professional ethics; • are capable of independently obtaining, selecting and analysing information and using it. Upon completion of the course students are able to find solutions to the relevant actual circumstances in the field of family law and to outline it in a reasoned way in oral or written form (in the claim statement and in explanatory statements, etc.).
