Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge: | Prior knowledge of propaedeutics, pathology, anatomy, pharmacology, immunology, dermatology and biochemistry. Students should be familiar with the subject matter learned in previous internal disease courses.
Objective: | The aim of the course is to consolidate and extend the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of students on the most common chronic pathologies in adults, acquired during various years of study at RSU Department of Internal Diseases; to prepare students for further practical work as a medical doctor; to teach students about the most significant and common chronic internal diseases; to teach in practice the necessary examination methods, manipulations in the examination of patients with endocrine, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, nephrological, respiratory, oncological and haematological diseases. During the placement, students are able to evaluate the patient's symptoms, establish the diagnosis, prescribe the range of examinations required, evaluate the results of laboratory, radiological and functional examinations, stratify risks and develop a treatment plan. Placement rotation is a practical and integrative format for the organisation of medical studies in teams.
Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Placement rotation in internal medicine should be carried out in internal medicine profile wards in a hospital, in internal medicine profile units in an outpatient medical setting, or in a GP practice. During the placement rotation the student assists and provides support to medical doctor, considering the student's professional knowledge and skills acquired and evaluated during the previous study period: they are able to record and describe the electrocardiogram; they are able to perform a pleural puncture under the supervision of a certified medical doctor, they can understand the results of bronchoscopy. The student assists and provides support to a physician – placement rotation supervisor in treating of patients, performing practical manipulations, completing medical records, and in other activities. In addition to the practical work, the student should read the special literature according to the course description.
Assessment Criteria: | The overall assessment of the placement consists of the student's characterization from the placement, as well as the assessment by the examination committee following the interview with the student, which also includes the analysis of one clinical case from the placement rotation, could be also a situation, where the student would have acted differently. For the placement test, knowledge and skills of the student shall be considered to be successful if they correspond to the assessment “pass”. The placement test may be taken twice. The content of the activities performed by the student (diagnoses, manipulations and other activities related to the patient undergoing treatment) must be presented in the relevant sections of the Placement Rotation Portfolio, which is signed by the doctor-supervisor(mentor) of the rotation.

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | Upon completion of the study course, the student will have acquired knowledge and will be able to analyse and understand the clinical, laboratory and visual examination methods of patients of various profiles with regard to the most common chronic pathology in adults. They will know and recognize the symptoms and algorithms of various diseases – investigation and treatment tactics, patient safety and clinical risk management; they will be able to produce evidence-based recommendations, will be able to apply critical thinking and synthesize knowledge.
Skills: | Students will be able to collect history, perform physical examination of patients, evaluate patient's vital signs (i.e. patient's state of consciousness, breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral pulse, arterial blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, body temperature, diuresis), recognize patients with haemodynamic instability, prescribe diagnostic examinations and therapy, diagnose the patient, educate the patient on health and disease prevention issues, provide emergency care, draw up medical records, use information and communication technology, observe general and professional ethics, organize one's own and teamwork. Students will be able to educate patients on rational use of medicines, possibilities of disease prevention and public health issues. They will be able to express sympathy in the conversation with a patient/ relative and to express a reasoned opinion. Students will be able to check patients' compliance with treatment recommendations.
Competencies: | The competence acquired during the study course will allow purposeful and structured examination of the patient's history, assessment of the patient's vital signs (namely, patient's state of consciousness, breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral pulse, arterial blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, body temperature, diuresis) the components and symptomatology that affect it; the competence will allow to assess the patient's health status, interpret normality and deviation and relate the finding to the specific situation and to take decision regarding the further activity. It will allow to recognize acute medical conditions, to organize timely assistance, to interpret the results of various examinations and draw appropriate conclusions and to plan the treatment. The acquired competence will allow to perform manipulations appropriate to the respective pathological condition, to write prescriptions, to fill in medical documentation in accordance with the requirements of regulatory enactments.
