Preliminary Knowledge: | Biology, histology, anatomy and genetics. | ||||||||
Objective: | Students develop understanding of the development of embryology; basic human development (fertilization, implantation, bi- and trilaminar embryo, placentation, development of three germ layers); of the main cellular, subcellular and molecular processes (induction, determination, differentiation and growth), and of processes at all stages of embryogenesis and fetogenesis. Students develop understanding of histogenesis and organogenesis of particular tissues and organs. Students acquire knowledge of critical periods, critical factors and different congenital and developmental anomalies that arise at different periods of intrauterine life. Students acquire knowledge of achievements in modern experimental embryology and their practical use in daily work of a doctor, and of the elements and significance of comparative embryology. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | As part of the study course, individual work is organized by analyzing micropreparations and preparing lesson protocols. Individual work with recommended literature, according to the topic of lectures and classes. Analysis of the results of scientific publications, for deepening the understanding of the study course. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | • Laboratory class protocols of appropriate quality finished and submitted in due time; • Multiple choice examination in combination with practical analysis of specimens at the end of the course. 10 lectures; 6 classes; Semester pass after handing in appropriately prepared protocols and attended practical classes and lectures; final written exam with multiple choice questions and 5 slide recognition (50/50). During the examination, the students’ theoretical knowledge of embryonic tissue and organ morphology and practical skills in analyzing specimens are tested. Students show how to specify age-related changes in tissues and organs. They demonstrate their understanding of the development of tissues and organs as well as the ability to relate morphology with processes. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | On successful completion of the study course students will be able to demonstrate understanding of embryology and significance of prenatal diagnostic methods, to describe structural features of primordia in tissue and organs at different developmental stages, to define risk periods in histo- and organogenesis, and to analyse the most often observed developmental anomalies. | ||||||||
Skills: | The student will be able to determine the abnormalities of the human system and organs under a microscope, but will recognize the developmental stages of the face, jaw and neck, as well as the sensory organs, analyze their correspondence to the time of development and standard embryonic structures. Will be able to assess possible teratogenic effects. Will be able to describe embryological schemes. Will be able to interpret and analyze course databases and cited literature sources. | ||||||||
Competencies: | Students will be able to recognize embryonic tissue and organ morphology and structure in clinical specimens. They can analyse variations at different stages of embryonic development and distinguish between healthy and pathological tissues in specimens. The students will be able to estimate the significance of various inducers on the developmental processes with respect to postnatal life. | ||||||||
