Preliminary Knowledge: | Experience in working with patients. Understanding naturalistic and humanitarian concept of the psyche. | ||||||||
Objective: | To provide basic knowledge of the theories of personality, personality functioning levels and personality structure. To provide knowledge of the psychoemotional and somatic factor interactions in etiopathogenesis of psychosomatic disorders. To provide knowledge of manifestation of chronic pain in dentist's practice. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Read the relevant literature before each class and prepare questions. Prepare clinical case presentations of patients from their practices, according to the topic of the class. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | I. Knowledge – the ability to define: 60%: 1. Patient mental health criteria (10%) 2. Mental protection mechanisms of the patient (10%) 3. Personality functioning levels of the patients (5%) 4. Basics of collecting psychosomatic history (anamnesis) (10%) 5. Principles of building a therapeutic dentist-patient relationship (10%) 6. Psychosomatic disorders in dentistry (chronic pain, etc.) (10%) 7. Definitions of personality, development theories (5%). II. Skills: 40%: 1. Basics of building a therapeutic dentist-patient relationship, communication with patients with different functioning levels (10%) 2. Dentist - patient support therapy elements (10%) 3. Basics of collecting psychosomatic history (anamnesis) (10%) 4. Diagnosis of psychosomatic disorders, differential diagnosis, evaluation of treatment strategies, analysis of clinical cases (10%). Automatic exam credit: 1. 100% attendance of classes and lectures AND 2. The student is an active participant in discussions and role plays. 3. According to the lecturer's instructions – prepares an essay in the amount of 5 – 6 pages, with the analysis of the questions asked by the lecturer. OR Prepares a presentation about: a) lesson topics (literature review); b) clinical case; c) latest research (according to the topic of the lesson). | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | Knowledge of etiopathogenesis of psychosomatic disorders and diseases in dental clinic. Understands how to create doctor-patient relationship and its therapeutic aspects. Analyses differences in doctor-patient relationship according to various personality structures. | ||||||||
Skills: | Students will be able to diagnose psychosomatic disorders and to understand their etiopathogenesis. Ability to provide supportive therapy elements in doctor-patient relationship. | ||||||||
Competencies: | Students will recognize psychosomatic disorders in dental clinic patients and send them to the doctor-psychotherapist. They will manage to provide supportive therapy elements. | ||||||||
