As part of Informality Research Days, on 22 October at 18:00 teaching staff of the Rīga Stradiņš University Social anthropology programme are organising a presentation of The Global Encyclopaedia of Informality at the Bolderāja cafe.

The_Global_Encyclopaedia_of_Informality__Volume_1_Cover.jpgManaging editor of the encyclopaedia project, University College London Professor Alena Ledeneva will visit Rīga. Ms Ledeneva has researched themes such as blats, corruption, and informal practice in Russia  and is viewed as one of the leading informality experts in the world. The encyclopaedia entries include topics such as envelope wages, and researchers from Latvia have been involved, including Rīga Stradiņš University Assist. Prof. Klāvs Sedlenieks.

The encyclopaedia has compiled entries on different ways of "getting things done" which are outside the official framework, yet are prevalent in every society: about unwritten laws and secrets that are actually never secrets within the local community and are not always seen as something negative.

Everyone is invited to the book presentation and discussion. The event will be held in English.

The two volumes of the encyclopaedia are available on the UCL publishing company website.

An international conference Tracing Informality in Southeast and Northeast Europe: Anthropological Perspectives  was held as part of Informality Research Days on 18 and 19 October.
