The EUI Widening Europe Programme, in collaboration with the RSU Social Sciences Research Centre, warmly invites master’s students and early PhD researchers at Rīga Stradiņš University to join a workshop on Introduction to case studies.

About the course

This workshop draws on socio-legal research methods to explore how case studies can enrich our understanding of the law and supplement doctrinal legal research. The aim is to guide participants in developing the methodological tools to conduct research about ‘law in social context.’ Participants should arrive to the course with a research question they would like to answer in mind. Together with the instructor the participants will enquire into how legal researchers can use case studies to uncover ‘legal realities’ through the use of various types of methods and how they can prepare to apply them.

The teaching style of the module is literature-based. The selected literature is skill-focused and will equip participants with practical knowledge that they can use to enhance their methodological portfolio. The first day will focus on exploring the assigned literature together. After brief introduction, participants will engage in a group discussion. On the second day, participants should briefly present how they might use case studies in their own research. The workshop will be concluded by discussing some of the practical hurdles and scientific limitations of case studies and how to plan for them when choosing to include case studies in your research.

In case you are interested in participating, please fill out this registration form by 26 November (midnight). The reading materials will be shared with the registered participants shortly after the registration is closed.

As the workshop is highly interactive, the number of places is limited, while registration would be on the first come, first served basis. Participants of the workshop will receive certificates of attendance from the EUI Widening Europe Programme.
