Preliminary Knowledge: | Ability to read and understand text in English. Prior knowledge of medical sociology is preferred. | ||||||||
Objective: | Provide knowledge of factors that determine the changing public attitude towards normality and mental illness. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Students read the assigned articles before each seminar and/or examine the case studies and prepare to analyze them. Students prepare to pass the test at the end of the course. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | (1) Active participation in seminars: demonstrating ability to actively reproduce the read material by displaying substantive arguments on the topic. (2) Final test at the end of the course. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | Student will be able to explain how different factors (culture, social environment, religion, political regime, the media, medicine, etc.) determine normality and madness. | ||||||||
Skills: | Student will be able to analyze with mental illness related issues in the society and health and social care: well-being and quality of life in nursing homes and psychiatric hospitals, stigma and discrimination, integration in society, rights of mentally ill people etc. | ||||||||
Competencies: | Ability to assess the impact a variety of factors (cultural specifics, social background, religion, political regime, medical, etc.) on the definition of normality and madness and evaluate the impact of these factors in the treatment of mental disorders. | ||||||||
