Preliminary Knowledge: | Acquired study courses on the research topic or field. | ||||||||
Objective: | The purpose of the study course is to create an understanding of the development of research work: the application of theoretical knowledge, academic skills and abilities, when developing research design, work content, tasks and research questions, research methods, justifying the relevance of the work and selecting the necessary sources. The development of the study work is advised by the relevant study course a lecturer with a master's degree. | ||||||||
Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Development of the Paper and analysis. Development of the summary, compilation of sources and preparation of the annotation in Latvian and English or German. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | Defense of work. The evaluation takes place according to the regulations adopted by the RSU. Knowledge, skills and competence are assessed. KNOWLEDGE: - name and describe science branches in Latvia; - names the types of research design; - arranges the stages of the research in a logical order; - outlines the conditions of the Methodological Rules for the basic requirements for research design; - identifies types of academic honesty; - name 2-4 types of legal problem and describe each of them; - defines the types of sources and the possibilities of finding them for scientifically reliable sources; - describes the topic and topic differences; - reproduces the logic of the content chapters from the sample; - identifies 11 elements of research methodology; - names methods and methods of interpretation of legal norms, knows how to handle them; - describes the nature of scientific writing style; - name the features of other writing styles; - describes the essence of the final research work; - summarizes the research results from the sample; - recognizes the stages of presenting the research result. SKILLS: - explains and argues the choice of research design for legal science research; - explains and justifies the necessity of the sequence of research stages; - explains the essence of the Methodological Rules and recognizes errors in their non-observance; - recognizes violations of academic honesty in practical situations; - identifies the type of legal problem in a specific situation; - recognizes and knows how to find scientifically reliable sources; - can formulate topics and topic names in examples; - can formulate a simple table of contents from a sample; - can explain the use of methodology in study work I; - knows how to arrange the elements of the methodology in the correct order and is able to describe this order; - able to describe differences in methods and methods of interpretation of legal norms; - recognizes the scientific writing style in the text; - is able to explain the mechanism of formation of the conclusion of the research work; - is able to select research results from the sample to be forwarded for presentation; - knows how to identify the most important research results that characterize the topic; - able to lay out the final content in a presentation sample (PPTX); - able to work in a team, discuss, argue and present research results. COMPETENCES: - resolves practical violations of academic integrity; - describes a specific legal problem for its topic; - knows how to find and use scientifically reliable sources for his topic; - plans and describes the research methodology for the chosen topic; - modifies the methods and methods of interpretation of legal norms for the topic of his research work; - knows how to design a research paper in accordance with the requirements of the Methodological Regulations; - analyzes foreign text, finding methodology errors and correcting them; - practically knows how to present the results of research work using a sample (PPTX). | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | Systematise, consolidate and expand the theoretical knowledge and skills of a student in addressing practical tasks; promote the acquisition of skills needed for a written research paper and the methodology of studying a specific topic (problem) (selection of sources and literature, analysis, critical evaluation, material synthesis, etc.); promote independent work and focus on self-education; help to develop skills in the promotion of legal sciences (public speaking, reasoned and logical defending and substantiating of own opinions, both orally and in writing, etc.). Student: able to name topics and topic differences; can describe the signs of scientifically reliable sources; identifies methods and methods of interpretation of legal norms, the basis of their classification; describes the methodological elements of the research work and is able to arrange them in a logical order; describes the nature and course of presenting research results; describes the nature of the bibliography design and the criteria for the arrangement of sources. | ||||||||
Skills: | Develop the ability to analyse and compare the information obtained, while expressing own opinions on the analytical work carried out. Be able to express own ideas and make precise legal formulations. Student: knows how to formulate a research topic, create a table of contents (research plan); able to describe the legal problem of the research; able to formulate and describe the elements of research methodology; able to analyze scientifically reliable sources in order to formulate their thoughts, creating accurate legal formulations; able to create and write a bibliography list; able to speak in front of an audience, present the results of the research in an argumentative and logical manner, justify their opinion, answer questions. | ||||||||
Competencies: | Successful defence of the Semester Paper indicates the student’s ability to work with legal and other sources, to develop the table of contents for the Paper (plan), to determine the scope of research, to analyse the opinions of other researchers, to draw conclusions and to make proposals according to the specific character of the chosen topic. The student: understands the methodology of research work and knows how to develop it, as well as defend it publicly; knows how to design a research paper and bibliographic sources. | ||||||||
