Preliminary Knowledge: | Knowledge of the English language. Without preliminary knowledge of the Latvian. | ||||||||
Objective: | To acquire Latvian at conversational level in order to be able to communicate with patients and apply Latvian at basic level in daily communication (A1 – A2). | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Individual and pair work – mastering the vocabulary and grammar of the corresponding topic, work with dictionary, making up dialogues. Students are obliged to fill in the course evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | Active participation in classes; written home assignments. At the end of semester 1 – final test. During 2nd semester there are 3 tests (written and oral). All tests should be successfully passed. Average grade of all tests is the final grade for the course acquisition. If students don't want the average grade for tests as final grade for the course, there is an exam at the end of the course. Exam consists of written and oral part. The written part includes multiple choice test to check grammar and vocabulary of the course content. In the oral part, students must be able to gather patient’s personal information, to inform the patient on his/her activities and manipulations, as well as give instructions to the patient. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | On successful completion of the course, students will: • know the lexical minimum of conversational themes; • know the simplest Latvian language grammar rules; • know the principles of question formation, including question words; • be able to name the human body parts, oral cavity organs; • be able to name the most common symptoms of oral cavity diseases. | ||||||||
Skills: | On successful completion of the course, the students will be able: • to select and use appropriate vocabulary in communication with patients; • to develop a case history; • to apply Latvian in study process and basic daily communication. | ||||||||
Competencies: | On successful completion of the course, students will be able to use practically dentistry vocabulary and use Latvian language at basic level in daily communication. | ||||||||
