Preliminary Knowledge:
Knowledge in Latvian acquired at a secondary school.
Objective:
To supplement knowledge about Latvian Standard; to provide a basic knowledge in phonetics and phonology; to promote the use and extension of specific vocabulary for academic and professional needs.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
The student searches and analyzes texts that include errors from the norms of the standard variety, and studies theoretical resources describing the possibilities of preventing such errors. Latvian and international phonetic transcription of the text using the phonetic alphabet must be performed. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.
Assessment Criteria:
1) Individual work “Complecting and analysing of language errors” (25%); 2) an evaluation of the quality of scientific text, an evaluation of the quality of technical document (25%); 3) classification of the Latvian sounds (25%); 4) Latvian phonetic transcription, phoneme changes (25%).

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:On completion of the course, the student will be able to: • use the current terminology related to issues of language culture; • know the most common errors of language culture; • manage most important resources of issues of Latvian language culture; • know functional styles of language and their typical units; • use the current terminology related to issues of phonetics and phonology; • know how to classify sounds of the Latvian language; • know how to use Latvian and International phonetic transcription; know how to analyse sounds of the Latvian language by using spectral features.
Skills:On completion of the course, the student will be able to: • identify, classify and analyse errors of standard language use; • classify and explain errors according to the theoretical resources; • debate on language errors; • edit texts of different styles according to the Latvian Standard norms; • classify Latvian sounds according to phonetic and phonology rules; • apply symbols of phonetic transcription in practice; • use a software for acoustic analysis.
Competencies:On completion of the study course, the students will be able to: • develop texts of different functional types, • identify errors of various language levels, • correct and explain them using theoretical resources; • use phonetic transcription for professional needs in speech therapy; use the classification of Latvian sounds according to phonetic and phonology rules.
