On 14 November, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) held its doctoral graduation ceremony, awarding more than 30 Doctor of Science degrees for the first time. The graduates were personally congratulated by Artjoms Uršuļskis, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Health, and Juris Jansons, Ombudsman of the Republic of Latvia.
This year, 37 doctoral students graduated from RSU's doctoral programmes in medical, health, and social sciences. Over the past decade, RSU has awarded 359 doctoral degrees, highlighting its long-standing role in Latvian and international academia.
A notable highlight is the RSU Medicine subprogramme, where 285 doctoral theses have been defended over the past decade. This year alone, 10 new doctoral theses were defended in medicine, showcasing significant research achievements and reinforcing the foundations of Latvian medical science. Doctoral candidates in other fields have also demonstrated exceptional results: 29 theses have been defended in law, 20 in pharmacy, and 20 in political science, social anthropology, sociology, and social work.
Several of the doctoral theses defended are interdisciplinary, such as those in molecular epidemiology and infectious disease research, which integrate clinical, laboratory, and public health approaches to deliver innovative solutions and push the frontiers of knowledge.
The contribution of RSU lecturers and researchers to the development of doctoral students is equally significant. This year alone, RSU professors supervised 18 doctoral theses, upholding high academic standards and supporting the growth of young researchers.
At the event, RSU management emphasized that a doctoral degree is just the first step in an ongoing academic and professional career. The contributions of the Doctor of Science graduates will undoubtedly be significant, both in Latvia and internationally, driving excellence and innovation across various fields.
