On 13 June the RSU Medical Education Technology Centre hosted a seminar organised by the RSU Gynaecology and Obstetrics Interest Group titled Altered vaginal microflora and sexually transmitted infections in women.

In the first part of the seminar, Gynaecology and Colposcopy Specialist from Riga East Clinical University Hospital Jana Žodžika gave a presentation on normal and altered vaginal flora, emphasising that a patient’s complaints and symptoms are the main reason for starting treatment. Over one’s lifetime every women faces altered vaginal microflora – bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, aerobic vaginitis or trichomoniasis – and therefore this is a topical issue for every woman, including prospective medical specialists.

The second part of the seminar was devoted to sexually transmitted infections. Gynaecologist Daiga Baranovska from medical clinic ARS spoke about chlamydiosis, gonorrhea, syphilis, anogenital herpes and human papiloma virus, describing the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and possible complications. 

Both specialists shared their professional experience, by presenting a number of clinical cases.
