University of Debrecen
How did you draw up your Learning Agreement?
This process is made easier by dream-agreement.eu, where you can make the learning agreement you want with the courses you need, and make changes during your mobility if any of the courses are not available at the host university. You need the study programme and course descriptions of the sending and host universities to prepare the learning agreement. After I researched the desired courses and made the agreement, it is sent to the two universities involved for approval. When I was at the University of Debrecen, I could set up an individual schedule for attending classes in the different groups studying in English.
How is the study process organized in the receiving university? What is different compared to RSU?
One semester consists of 10 study weeks, 4 weeks of practice and 7–8 weeks of exams. Depending on the scope of the course, it is organised over 5 or all 10 weeks of study. Classes and lectures are held once a week for each subject, with additional seminars and mandatory lectures for some subjects. Internships are available in several hospitals in Hungary and abroad after you complete the study courses, and this is support for international students so that they can spend part of their studies in their home country or experience medical practice in another country. Exams are organised either as computer-based multiple-choice tests or verbally with a theoretical and practical part.
What were the living conditions?
The University of Debrecen has a large, modern complex of dormitories in its campus, and you can choose from a wide range of amenities at affordable prices. Students often chose to rent a private room in a flat or house, as rental prices in Debrecen are only slightly higher than dormitories, but with different privileges. The University and its departments offer a wide range of leisure activities. The University offers traditional sports training, you can also master the basics of individual sport disciplines and develop body and strength at the UniFit University Sports Club, or do meditation and yoga. The organisation ESN Debrecen is responsible for introducing mobility students to the University and organises regular events and trips around Hungary to promotes friendship and the exchange of cultural experiences. The Erasmus Buddy Programme ensures cooperation between each exchange student and a local university student who helps them to deal with issues both at university and in everyday life in Hungary, and eventually becomes a support person and friend for life. Local and international students are very supportive, willing to help and share their experiences of living and studying in Debrecen, Hungary.
Did the Erasmus+ grant cover the living expenses?
The grant is optimal for staying in a dormitory and cooking meals at home, and can also save money for travelling, conferences, sports and other spare-time expenses. The use of the funds awarded clearly depends on individual priorities.
Your advice and recommendations for others choosing this city for their mobility
Debrecen is a real student town and many places, events and other city activities are adapted for them. It is necessary to remember that the Hungarian forint is used in the country, so I recommend you check in advance whether the bank you use charges extra interest and currency conversion fees for every purchase made abroad. For everyday purchases, I recommend the Revolut card and app. Debrecen train station has excellent train connections and students can use it with a 50% discount. The airport offers flights to well-known destinations at very good prices, so as soon as you have your study schedule, I recommend planning a holiday in one of the European capitals, as everything is within easy reach.
The best memory or experience from Erasmus+ mobility
The most memorable event is yoUDay, a traditional opening semester festival for University of Debrecen students, held in one of the biggest stadiums in the country, right in the heart of Debrecen. It was like being in an American college movie, as the brilliant light show, the parade of flags, the talented dance artists and musicians created a superb and festive atmosphere!
The most valuable realization or lesson you have learned
When talking with new friends, fellow students and openly sharing thoughts about life and studying, I also had to redefine for myself what connects, inspires and pushes me forward in my chosen profession and what makes life richer and more meaningful – that's why the exchange time is so valuable!
I recommend to use the mobility period and the grant support to develop yourself and to dare to do things that seem impossible in everyday life!
