Plans to Develop Undergraduates' Knowledge and Skills in Sexual Medicine
Since 2019 the Institute of Public Health at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) has been involved in COST ACTION 18124 of the European Sexual Medicine Network. One of the four working groups studied information published in scientific journals and the existing practices of the 32 countries represented in this project. The results confirm existing gaps in knowledge and skills regarding sexual health. There was agreement to focus activities on reaching a stage where 'education in sexual medicine for medical and psychology students is an integrated part of undergraduate training.'
A coordinated curriculum on sexual health is an important goal for RSU. The Institute of Public Health has already initiated activities to reach this goal. The knowledge, experience and practice of a team of international experts in the field of sexual health is crucial to optimising the education system.
Prof. Gunta Lazdāne, Head of the Institute of Public Health, participated in a COST ACTION group meeting in Basel (Switzerland) on 21-23 February 2020. The group agreed on a core curriculum that will be reviewed, expanded, and updated over the next four months.
In early October 2020 RSU will host an ESMN meeting where the activities of all four working groups, including research and implementation in practice of the first year of the COST ACTION 18124, will be discussed and further steps agreed upon.
We are sure it will be a great possibility for the RSU researchers joining new research projects in the area of sexual health.
