RSU to participate in project under Central Baltic Sea Region cross-border co-operation programme

Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), the Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare, Department of Nursing and Midwifery together with four other project participants have launched the international project: OnBoard-Med, Harmonisation of on Board Medical Treatment, Occupational Safety and Emergency Skills in Baltic Sea Shipping to be implemented by 30 June 2019.

The main objective of the project is to develop and coordinate training courses targeted at improving medical treatment, emergency and occupational safety skills for maritime stakeholders in the Baltic Sea region and to enhance cross-border cooperation between medical and maritime transportation institutions.

The first meeting of project partners which was hosted by the lead partner – Turku University of Applied Sciences was held in the beginning of November in Turku (Finland). The meeting was attended by all project partners – Åland University of Applied Sciences, Estonian Nautical School, Latvian Maritime Academy and Riga Stradiņš University. RSU was represented by OnBoard-Med Project Manager Asst. Prof. Liāna Deklava, Head of the Project Programme Asst. Prof. Kristaps Circenis and Assistant Project Manager Agnese Špūle.

Within the framework of the project it is planned to develop nine professional training courses, aimed at streamlining the skills of crew members, maritime nurses, deck officers and maritime engineers in medical treatment, occupational safety and first aid. The developed training courses will be approbated in a pilot study and the materials developed will be adapted for e-learning on an international scale. The training courses will ensure acquisition of up-to-date professional skills which in turn will enhance the opportunities of local employees in the European and international labour market.
