Objective

To develop an understanding of the key issues addressed by economics at both the micro and macro levels, and to promote the acquisition of basic knowledge about the significance of entrepreneurship in the economy, various forms of business, legal aspects, work organization, financial planning, as well as the role of innovation in business, and its impact on competitiveness and growth

Prerequisites

Secondary school-level knowledge in economics, mathematics and statistics.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Students will be able to:
- define the main economic goals and problems,
- describe the role of the state in the economy,
- name the main legislative acts that regulate business,
- explain the necessity of economic activity accounting,
- name and describe the types of business risks,
- define what innovations are and explain their impact on business.

Skills

Students will be able to:
- Compare the similarities and differences between microeconomics and macroeconomics.,
- evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of economic systems,
- analyze the behavior of market subjects,
- compare the economic indicators of Latvia and other countries,
- compare business forms, determine their advantages and disadvantages,
- choose the appropriate business form for the specific economic activity,
- develop a business model, perform SWOT and PEST analysis,
- create an appropriate organizational structure, determine the necessary resources,
- evaluate the role and importance of innovations in business.

Competence

Using the acquired knowledge, students will be able to:
- discuss the global impact on the national economy,
- evaluate Latvia's tax policy and budget,
- evaluate the business environment in Latvia and the role of the state in promoting business,
- identify and use innovation opportunities to promote sustainability,
- evaluate business risks, as well as make decisions for their mitigation and prevention.
