Objective

To help the students acquire skills and conception of neurosurgically curable disorders.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of neurological examination.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

On completion of the course the students will be able to:
• describe and specify the basic principles of diagnostics for pathologies, which can be neurosurgically corrected;
• define common types of head trauma;
• classify head traumas according to severity degrees;
• evaluate the condition of the patient according to Glasgow Coma Scale, Hunt-Hess scale;
• characterise common causes of subarachnoid haemorrhage;
• evaluate general and specific clinical symptoms of CNS tumours;
• recognise common pathologies, which can be treated neurosurgically (degenerative diseases of the spine, hydrocephaly, compression of the peripheral nerves, CNS development abnormalities).

Skills

After successful completion of the course the students will have sufficient practical skills and competence to:
• recognise and interpret clinical and radiological features of neurosurgically curable conditions;
• prescribe the necessary examinations to make the correct diagnosis;
• explain adequately the basic principles and indications of neurosurgical manipulations.

Competence

As a result of the course acquisition the student will be able to:
• argue, rationalize and formulate a comprehensive clinical diagnosis of neurosurgery;
• develop tactics for a specific neurosurgical clinical situation;
• formulate indications for conservative and operative treatment.
