Objective

To develop and strengthen the mastered theoretical knowledge and skills in social work, learning in the work environment in a health care institution.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the social security system in Latvia; the organisation of social work in the medical environment; social work with adults and elderly people; social work with a case; knowledge in developmental and communication psychology, conducting conversations, gerontology. International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Will be able to recognise human health disorders and their effects on functioning capacity; will be able to identify appropriate health and social services for maintaining or improving the functioning capacity of a person with health disorders.

Skills

Will be able to work in a medical practitioner’s team, evaluating the patient’s health; will be able to identify hazard situations, crises and acute stress reactions; will be able to identify the patient’s / client’s social needs, will be able to evaluate and attract individual, family or community resources according to patient’s/client’s needs.

Competence

Will be able to provide the patient/client with practical, informative and emotional support; will be able to apply a social case management algorithm to persons with health problems.
