Objective

To develop students’ theoretical and practical skills in therapeutic dentistry in order to recognise dental hard tissue, pulp and periodontal tissue disorders and make decisions about their treatment, prevention and management at individual and population levels.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
• describe structure, functions and pathologies of dental hard tissues;
• define local and general factors – microorganisms, carbohydrates, saliva, fluoride intake, dietary factors, socio-economic factors – in development of caries and other dental hard tissue disorders;
• collect and recognise clinical manifestation of caries and other dental hard tissue disorders;
• define aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease;
• describe classification of periodontal disease and recognise different types of periodontal disease;
• memorize steps and sequence of diagnostic and treatment methods of periodontal diseases;
• describe pathologies of pulp and periodontal tissue;
• diagnose pulpal and periapical disease, perform satisfactory non-surgical primary root canal treatment;
• make evaluation of the outcome and prognosis of the root canal treatment, restore endodontically treated tooth;
• formulate the indications for endodontic retreatment.

Skills

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
• select and apply appropriate method of caries and other dental hard tissue treatment, considering its limitations;
• interpret data on the presence of different stages of the caries process and symptoms related to dental caries;
• perform patient examination to diagnose periodontal disease;
• assess prognosis for single tooth and for dentition;
• diagnose and treat acute forms of periodontal diseases;
• perform nonsurgical (conventional) methods of treatment, plan corrective and maintaining phases of treatment and assess results of treatment;
• use different diagnostic tests. Practice of dental radiology in respect to endodontic treatment;
• perform satisfactory non-surgical primary root canal treatment of single rooted and uncomplicated multi-rooted teeth, and emergency treatment;
• perform emergency treatment;
• prepare a treatment plan, accompanied by continuing general oral health preventive care;
• evaluate results and prognosis of the treatment, anticipated complications and their prevention, modify the plan of treatment.

Competence

On successful completion of the course, the students will be able: to evaluate, prevent and control caries and other dental hard tissue disorders, pulpal pathologies and periodontal disease, to explain their integration in oral health system and interaction with other oral disorders and general health.
