Launch of a new book on visual activism and reproductive rights
On 21 March, the Social Sciences Research Centre at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) hosted the launch of the book Transnational Visual Activism in Support of Women’s Reproductive Rights: My Body, My Choice. The event was led by RSU lead researcher Jana Kukaine, author of the chapter "My First Year Too: Violence in Childbirth and Maternal Subjectivity".
The event brought together researchers in social sciences and humanities, artists, activists, and medical professionals for discussions on women’s reproductive rights and comprehensive maternity care. The aim was to find common conceptual ground for developing tools and strategies to enhance public awareness on these critical issues.
Publicist and journalist Agra Lieģe-Doležko and artist Elīna Brasliņa introduced the artistic activist project My First Year Too. Meanwhile, gynaecologist and RSU researcher Elizabete Ārgale shared insights from her research and professional experience.
The event also featured a creative workshop by Elīna Brasliņa, performances of traditional folk songs and dances by the University of Latvia’s folklore group Dandari, and personal stories shared by participants.
The book is available at the RSU Library.
