Representatives from RSU attend international conference on human resources in healthcare
A high-level international conference on ‘Healthcare human resources crisis: small countries facing future risks’, organised by the Ministry of Health, took place in Riga on 11 April.
The event was attended by health ministers from Latvia, Cyprus, and Montenegro, as well as representatives from other European countries, the World Health Organization and the OECD.
The conference addressed key issues such as human resource planning, adapting education and work environments to meet today’s challenges, and exploring opportunities for cross-border cooperation. More than a third of Europe’s doctors are over the age of 55 and will need to be replaced by younger professionals. However, the limited availability of resources makes it difficult to invest in healthcare, highlighting the need for innovative approaches and shared solutions, particularly for smaller countries facing similar challenges.
The conference was opened by Prime Minister Evika Siliņa and Minister of Health Hosam Abu Meri. The list of participants included Dr Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe; Dr Tomas Zapata, Head of the WHO Health Workforce and Service Delivery Unit; Zane Petre, Head of the European Commission Representation in Latvia; MSc Francesca Colombo, Head of the OECD Health Division; Dr Ole Johan Bakke, President of the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME); Dr Álvaro Cerame, President of the European Junior Doctors Association; and many others.
The conference participants also included representatives from Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU). Rector Prof. Aigars Pētersons (pictured), shared insights from the perspective of higher education institutions on preparing human resources for the health sector. He also delivered a presentation titled ‘University experience: how to successfully attract applicants for medical studies’.
The event served as a platform for the exchange of experience, strategic thinking, and international cooperation on the future of healthcare.
