RSU recognised for effective inclusion of students with special needs

Last month, Minister for Education and Science Mr Kārlis Šadurskis presented a certificate of appreciation to RSU Dean of International Student Department Smuidra Žermanos for promotion of social inclusion and significant contribution to ensuring access to education for students with disabilities. Altogether the Minister expressed appreciation to 17 individuals from educational establishments and non-governmental organisations. The authors of the given initiative are the Ombudsman of the Republic of Latvia and the association Apeirons.

In order to ensure equal opportunities for acquisition of higher education to all, including students with visual, hearing and mobility impairments, students with dyslexia and dyspraxia (physical coordination disorder), RSU is providing support at various study-related stages, starting with selection of the most appropriate study programme, adjustment of study materials and taking of tests. The university offers alternative options for satisfying study requirements, innovative study methods, assistance and supervision in the study process, aids and assistive technologies, adjustment of study course requirements to individual abilities and modification of test forms.

An accessible physical environment is an essential component of the provided support. The majority of RSU buildings are already adapted to individuals with special needs whereas the buildings currently under reconstruction are gradually adjusted to persons with disabilities in accordance with the respective construction regulations. The new RSU student hostel at 5 Dārza Street which will be put into operation before the academic year 2017/2018 will have two rooms adjusted for the needs of people in wheelchairs.
