The implementation of the Latvian-Ukrainian Cooperation Programme project Remote Educational Resource: Criminalistics as a Science (No LV-UA/2021/3) began at the beginning of the year. Interdisciplinary scientific research in the field of forensic expertise development is being carried out as part of the project.

From 29 November to 2 December, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) welcomed representatives from the Ukrainian National Scientific Centre (Hon. Prof. M.S. Bokarius Forensic Science Institute, NSC FSI). The project teams discussed the implementation process, met with representatives of the field, as well as the management and experts of the State Forensic Science Bureau, and discussed current events and issues related to the possibilities of development of various types of expertise in the development, implementation and potential obstacles of new and innovative methods during the visit. Various opportunities for expert training, professional development and exchange of experience were also discussed.

Teams also highlighted the issue of challenges that the development of forensics as a branch of science is facing nowadays, as well as the impact of technology on the transformation of the branch.

Together with representatives from the RSU Faculty of Law, the necessity to strengthen the academic capacity in the field of forensic development in Latvia and Ukraine was discussed, with particular emphasis on the introduction of innovations and technologies in the modern teaching and learning process.

The issue of the use of virtual reality technologies for students acquiring forensic study courses was discussed in relation to digitalisation process in higher education within the framework of the Remote Educational Resource: Criminalistics as a Science project.

At the end of the visit, the participants in the project presented the results they have already achieved in the project, and agreed on the main tasks and priorities for the coming year.
