The winner of Pauls Stradiņš Award is traditionally announced on 17 January, the birthday of professor Pauls Stradiņš. This year the award goes to Professor Alfredo Musajo Somma for his contribution to strengthening the role of Latvia, the Latvian Association of Medical Historians, Rīga Stradiņš University and Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the History of Medicine among medical historians on the international scale.

Somma (pictured) is a professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Bari (Italy). Alongside his academic work, the professor devotes special attention to the history of medicine and surgery in the 18th century. Prof. Musajo Somma is a board member of the International Society for the History of Medicine (ISHM) and has been actively engaged in organising the 47th Congress of the International Society for the History of Medicine that will be held in August 2020 in Riga. The award will be presented to the professor during the congress. Professor Somma will also deliver an academic speech during the congress.

The annual Pauls Stradiņš Award for outstanding research activity in medical history or significant contribution to practical medicine is presented by Pauls Stradiņš Museum for the History of Medicine, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and the Latvian Academy of Sciences. The award is named after Professor Pauls Stradiņš the outstanding surgeon, oncologist and founder of the hospital, museum, school of nursing as well as a lecturer of the faculty of Medicine.
