Lending a helping hand. A photo story by a social work student at RSU
Betija Anna Repule,
2nd-year student in the Social Work study programme
Studying social work at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) is a profound and inspiring journey. The programme gives me the opportunity to acquire high-quality academic knowledge as well as to develop skills and understanding of the social field. Every day, I can expand my theoretical and practical knowledge and gain experience and valuable advice from my peers and lecturers. I particularly appreciate the approach at RSU that encourages both individual development and collaboration in teams, which is essential in social work practice. My time at RSU is not only a period for studying, but also an important stage in my personal and professional development, which builds stability and gives me the fortitude to work in the social field. I am proud to be an RSU student and look forward to future challenges and opportunities.

Social work is an interdisciplinary profession, so there is a wide range of knowledge to acquire. It offers the opportunity to work in different sectors; you can work with clients to promote their well-being and integration into society, or you can work in the academic field, research, politics, or public administration. Knowledge and skills in the social, psychological, legal, and medical fields is required, as well as the ability to work in a team and deal with complex social issues.
Social work is a dynamic and exciting field where we not only get to help others, but also continuously develop ourselves as individuals and professionals.
There is a risk of burnout in social work, so it is important to be aware of your limits and take care of your well-being. We need to learn that quality leisure time is essential to maintain emotional and physical balance. I like hiking, travelling, and active leisure. I can completely relax and recharge in nature. These moments help me to rejuvenate physically and increase my motivation to continue to support and help others.

By participating in international projects, we not only gain new experiences, but also build a platform for international cooperation that generates innovative ideas and solutions. A striking example of a project like this was when we worked with landscape architects to create a park that would be attractive to all population groups. In this collaboration, we provided new ideas for creating a park where people could enjoy their leisure time. This project is a great example of how we are able to find solutions that meet the needs of different people and contribute to the well-being of society by combining knowledge and perspectives.
In this challenging and inspiring journey, social work is not only a profession, but also a vocation to serve others and create a positive change in society. Although it can be a challenging path, it offers the opportunity to experience unforgettable moments and to provide support to those who need it most. If you feel a calling to work with people and help them reach their potential, social work is the field where you can fulfil your vocation. Be inspired by the opportunity to build a better world, and join us on our journey towards the common goal of caring for and supporting each other.
We can all lend a helping hand to someone in need, but to do so professionally requires skills and knowledge.
