New Measures to Help Students With Housing Expenses During Pandemic
Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) has reached out to students living in student housing while studies are being conducted remotely. New measures have been introduced to help students with accommodation during the pandemic.
During the national state of emergency, or while there are restrictions to on-site learning, students can terminate their tenancy agreements before these have expired. The university will return students’ security deposits. If, on the other hand, students want to keep the rights to their accommodation, RSU will allow for tenancy agreements to be “frozen” or suspended. This means that students pay only 25% of their rent, and do not have to live in their accommodation.
If a tenant has to self-isolate outside the student hostel, and the term of the tenancy agreement is at least three months, they won’t have to pay rent for the duration of their self-isolation.
Tenancy agreements can be suspended until the state of emergency in Latvia ends, until restrictions concerning the study process are lifted, until the end of the tenant’s self-isolation period, or in similar situations.
RSU has additionally introduced a system through which students can apply to be compensated for accommodation expenses of up to 110 euros if they are returning to Latvia from abroad and have to self-isolate before returning to their student hostel. Students can apply for compensation once per semester.
New measures:
- Tenancy agreements can be terminated, in which case students will receive their deposit back;
- Tenancy agreements can be suspended if a student wants to reserve their accommodation while they are not living there, in which case they only have to pay 25% rent;
- No rent will be charged if a student has to self-isolate outside the student hostel;
- Once a semester, students can apply to be compensated for living expenses up to 110 euros if they have to self-isolate outside the student hostel.
