Secretary General of Egyptian Supreme Council of Universities visits RSU

On Friday, 4 March, Dr Ashraf Mahmoud Hatem, Secretary General of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Universities paid a visit to RSU Medical Education Technology Centre (RSU METC). During the visit he got acquainted with RSU and its English-taught study programmes and together with RSU Vice-Rector for Development Toms Baumanis and director of RSU International Department Baiba Pētersone discussed cooperation opportunities in the fields of medicine and health care.

Dr Hatem stressed that education in the fields of medicine and health care is especially significant for students from Egypt. He enquired about the admission criteria for RSU English-taught programmes, their content and carrier opportunities after graduation. Another matter which deserved attention during the meeting was cooperation within Erasmus+ programme – mobility with partner countries.

Finally, director of the Medical Education Technology Centre Roberts Rezgalis provided Dr Hatem a tour through the centre. Ms Māra Katvare from the Ministry of Education and Science was also among the participants of the meeting.

Dr Hatem’s visit was planned for two days. The aim of the visit was to get acquainted with the system of higher education in Latvia and strengthen cooperation between Latvia and Egypt in the field of higher education. In addition to visiting the top three Latvian institutions of higher education, Dr Hatem also met representatives from the Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, State Education Development Agency, Academic Information Centre and Council of Higher Education.

Dr Hatem has extensive experience in the field of health care. He was the Minister of Health in Egypt, held leading positions in several clinics in Egypt and worked as a professor at the University of Cairo. Dr Hatem also played an active role on editorial boards of several prestigious medical journals and is a member of various international associations, incl. the Royal Medical Society of the UK and Fulbright Commission.
