International Cooperation

On Tuesday, 1 April, Kensuke Yoshida, Ambassador of Japan to Latvia, visited RSU to explore the University’s scientific initiatives and development areas, as well as to discuss potential opportunities for future cooperation between Latvia and Japan in the fields of research and education.

During the meeting, the existing cooperation between RSU and Japanese research institutions was highlighted, particularly in the fields of medicine and social sciences. Ieva Puzo, Head of the RSU Social Sciences Research Centre, whose research focuses on the involvement of international scientists in Japanese research institutions, has participated in academic discussions in Japan and continues to promote this scientific dialogue.

One example of cooperation in the medical field is the efforts of RSU researchers and Okayama Medical Centre in research on disease treatment methods, which facilitates the exchange of knowledge and the development of new treatment approaches. During the discussions, future cooperation in pharmaceutical research, as well as viral and bacterial research, was explored, potentially offering new opportunities for scientists in both countries.

At present, there is one student from Japan studying at RSU, who has been living in Latvia for six years. Additionally, over the past three years, RSU has collaborated with two guest lecturers from Japan.

The visit of the Ambassador of Japan highlighted new opportunities for cooperation, which could enhance both scientific research and the mobility of international students, strengthening the ties between Japan and Latvia in the fields of academia and innovation.
