RSU Doctoral Student Receives Recognition at "ResearchSlam"

At ResearchSlam 2018, a contest for young researchers held last week, the presentation by Vita Melne, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) 3rd year doctoral student of the study programme Medicine was recognised as the second best presentation.

At the contest, Vita Melne gave a presentation “Prostate cancer. Is it deadly? Searching for it, finding it and how to proceed?” In her presentation she shared how she is searching for a marker to determine the speed of prostate cancer growth to choose the most suitable method to treat the spread of the disease.

First place and a scholarship of 700 EUR went to doctoral student of the University of Latvia, Ingus Pērkons, who gave a presentation on the effect of human pharmaceuticals on the environment and the most effective methods for measuring this pollution. 3rd place and a scholarship of 300 EUR was awarded to Rīga Technical University (RTU) doctoral student Ēvalds Urtāns who shared with the audience a self-developed artificial intellect algorithm, which he uses to teach a robot to clean the house.

The purpose of the ResearchSlam contest for young researchers, organised by RTU is to encourage young researchers to inform the general public about their research in a simple, attractive and comprehensible manner, using the PechaKucha format (20 slides x 20 seconds).
