RSU to expand cooperation with German medical universities

During a visit to Germany from 19 to 20 April, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Vice-Rector for Administration and Development Toms Baumanis and Vice-Rector for Health Studies Guntis Bahs met with members of Germany’s Federal Parliament Karamba Diaby and René Röspel and reached an agreement on the expansion of cooperation in the area of medical education.

Germany is interested in improving the quality and increasing access to medical education in the federal states and is pleased with the study opportunities of German youth in Latvia. Federal Parliament deputies K. Diaby and R. Röspel who are in charge of social issues, the development of universities and medical education among them, demonstrated a true interest in the study quality and study possibilities offered by RSU. They recognised that RSU is a well-known university in Germany and that cooperation could be expanded in the future. 

During the visit, RSU representatives also discussed cooperation with representatives of the University Hospital of Halle and its Medical Simulation Centre, the content of the study programme Medicine, other current issues and cooperation on patient safety. Simulation-based medical education in diploma studies and for continuing education, particularly to maintain the skill level of medical staff, is a topical matter not only in Latvia but also in Germany. 

The purpose of RSU is to achieve the synchronisation of RSU study programmes with German medical study programmes and to attain rapid further integration of simulation-based learning experience at the university. RSU is planning to develop clinical skills simulation centres with simulation wards in the larger hospitals of Latvia, and for this reason the experience of German colleagues is of high relevance.  /p>

RSU is looking forward to integrating into the professional organisations of German medical universities and their university hospitals to improve the study quality and international competitiveness of RSU. The university is also working on the development of a clinical study centre network in Germany. < /p>
