It would be overly poetic, and also slightly inaccurate, to say that spring is not only the time when flowers start to bud but also when medical students' relationships with their potential employers first start to appear. The majority of future physicians take the first steps towards their future speciality already in the last two years of their studies – they volunteer and participate in student interest groups, and choose specific topics and supervisors for their sixth-year research papers.
As 12 March is World Glaucoma Day, the entire week has been named World Glaucoma Week and takes place all over the world. During this week special attention is paid to eye health. This year World Glaucoma Week fallws between 11-17 March. The RSU Ophthalmology Interest Group invites everyone to the entrance hall of the Main Building between 13:00-17:00 on 14 March where various eye exams and tests will be performed.
Gynaecologist and obstetrician Lāsma Līdaka (pictured) has a pragmatic approach to research, stressing that it is unlikely that she could win the Nobel Prize through her work analysing processes on a local level. Taking the local approach does, however, give an opportunity to gain insight into the situation in Latvia, and to understand what can be changed in how work with both patients and students is currently conducted.
RSU will be represented by a team of 254 runners representing 18 countries at the Tet Riga Marathon which will be held on 19 May this year. The number of countries represented increased by two compared to last year’s event when RSU was the largest team among all Latvian university teams. The RSU team also took the lead in regards to international coverage received.
