Traditional Events

The graduation ceremony for residents took place in the Great Hall of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) at 16 Dzirciema iela, Riga on Friday, 27 September. This year, 167 residents graduated from the Faculty of Residency. Neurologists, ophthalmologists, general practitioners, and other doctors from 49 different specialties will begin their journey into the world of healthcare. The graduates were congratulated in person by the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Artjoms Uršuļskis, University officials, family, and friends.

After six years of medical education, residents must complete between three and six years of core specialty training, depending on their chosen specialty. This year, the largest number of graduates have chosen the specialities general practitioner, anaesthesiologist, intensive care physician, radiologist, and ophthalmologist.

Over the past years, RSU has purposefully promoted cooperation with regional medical institutions. Approximately 30% of this year's graduates were already working in a regional medical institution during their residency.

RSU is the leading medical higher education institution in Latvia, with the highest number of qualified doctors graduating each year. At the graduation ceremony, the resident doctors receive diplomas confirming that they have completed the Residency in Medicine study programme with a particular specialisation and have acquired their qualification. Residency study programmes at RSU are led by leading specialists in each field in Latvia. The programmes include both practical training and simulation and manipulation. Research is an integral part of the programme.

There are currently 1,057 residents studying in 67 specialities at RSU.
