7th Students’ Olympiad "Cor nostrum" winners named
The students’ Olympiad Cor nostrum is organised by the RSU Faculty of Medicine Department of Internal Diseases for 3rd year medical students. The seventh Olympiad was held on 6 June in the Stradiņš Auditorium at Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital and was attended by 35 RSU local and international students.
The tradition of testing the knowledge of students on internal diseases was started in 2012 at the same time as the updating of study content in the study subject Internal Diseases (Cardiology). Cor nostrum is continuing the traditions of the Olympiad of Propaedeutics, titled A capite ad calcem.
We congratulate the winner of the Olympiad Mihails Grivskis from the SMF2015v1 group, the winners who tied for second place - Deniss Gogins and Rūdolfs Vētra from group MF2015v8 and third place winners Anete Jakubone and Santa Sīle from MF2015v8. We would also like to congratulate academics – Professor Oskars Kalējs, Assistant Professor Konstantīns Pičkurs and lecturer Žanna Pičkure on the achievements of their students!
This year’s Olympiad consisted of 20 questions and covered a number of different topics, among them: the interaction of medicinal products, rare clinical cases in cardiology and new cardiac medications.
As it is hard to think of modern cardiology without knowledge in pathophysiology, radiology and pharmacology, to solve clinical cases, contest participants also required knowledge of these subjects which they had acquired over the course of three years.
The maximum possible number of points was 40. The absolute winner of the Olympiad, Mihails Grivskis, received 20 points, i.e. 50% of the maximum number of points possible. Notwithstanding the difficult questions, the winner could identify the most complex clinical cases.
After the award-giving ceremony, students participated in a discussion on the assignments which they had to solve. The discussion was also attended by associate professors Larisa Umnova and Konstantīns Pičkurs. Students and academics then discussed the course of the Olympiad, the assignments and shared recommendations for next year’s Olympiad.
