Award ceremony for the most successful athletes at RSU
On 28 May an awards ceremony was held to honour the sporting achievements of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) students. About 50 people were commemorated in total – individual athletes and sports teams as well as coaches, including several international students. Almost 50 medals were won in various sports disciplines this year. One of the biggest achievements was the Tet Riga Marathon that 205 runners, both RSU students and employees, participated in. Finnish student Jaakko Nieminen ended up winning first place in the 10-kilometre race!
As RSU rector Prof. Aigars Pētersons emphasised in his address: ‘We are proud of our students. We are proud to be a sports-oriented university!’
During the event awards were presented to 34 athletes representing a variety of disciplines like bench press, indoor rowing, powerlifting, cross-country skiing, judo, javelin-throwing, discus-throwing, track and field athletics and swimming.
The athletes especially excelled at the Tet Riga Marathon, the Latvian Universiade and at the SELL Student Games.
Recognition awards were presented to six RSU teams that achieved great results over the past academic year: the RSU aesthetic group gymnastics team (coach Maruta Hoferte), the men's football team RSU/BAO Dobele (coach Aleksandrs Radčenko), both the men's and the women's beach volleyball teams (coach Inguna Minusa), the women's volleyball team RSU/ MVS (coach Inguna Minusa) and the women's basketball team RSU (coach Aivars Vīnbergs).
Sporting life at RSU is lead and organised by the RSU Sports Club.
