Laying of the capsule marks the symbolic start of construction of the new RSU Sports Centre
To provide a modern and high-quality environment for sports and physical activity, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) has commenced the expansion of its sports complex, with the construction of a new building at 3 Cigoriņu iela in Torņakalns.
The new complex will span a total area of 3,627 m², featuring a sports hall, dedicated gymnastics areas, training zones, and gyms, as well as seating for up to 210 spectators. Designed to meet FIBA2 and CEV2 standards, the building is scheduled to open in the summer of 2026.
This development is part of RSU’s broader strategy to enhance its sports infrastructure, catering to the needs of students, researchers, staff, and the public. The centre will also aim to attract professional athletes, provide sports facilities for educational purposes, and create new opportunities for individuals pursuing active lifestyles.
The construction of the new facility is funded through RSU’s revenue, while the indoor and outdoor equipment required for the study process will be purchased with support from European Union funds.
The new sports complex is being built on land with a rich historical background. In the 19th century, the site housed a chicory root dryer and mill. Later, it served as an emigrant sauna and even as a sports hall for the Kurzemes manufaktūra textile factory. In the 1970s, the building was transformed into a dormitory, and in 2010, it was taken over by the RSU Sports Club.
Some of the original structures, such as the brickwork and decorative cornices, have been preserved and will provide a historic backdrop to the modern sports infrastructure.
The laying of the capsule will take place on 16 April, with the participation of Aigars Pētersons, Rector of Rīga Stradiņš University; Minister of Health Hosam Abu Meri; Luīze Monta Remese, Chairperson of the RSU Student Union; Rolands Orlovskis, Chairman of the Board of SIA Selva Būve; and Laura Ritova, Manager of the RSU Sports Club.
The design, construction, author’s supervision, and warranty for the new building are being carried out by SIA Selva Būve, with construction supervision provided by SIA BLV Advisory Group. The project has been developed by the architectural bureau SIA Būvdizains.
Project no. KPVIS 5.2.1.1.i.0/2/24/I/CFLA/005 RSU internal and RSU with LASE external consolidation.
