RSU Anatomy Museum Nominated for European Museum of the Year 2023
The Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Anatomy Museum is the only Latvian museum to be nominated for the European Museum Award this year. 33 museums from different countries will compete for Europe's oldest and most prestigious award in the museum field.
The award goes to the museum that benefits society and offers new, unconventional ideas and solutions in the design of museum buildings and exhibitions. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the European Museum Forum's annual conference in Barcelona on 3-6 May, 2023.
‘Being nominated for European Museum of the Year is an amazing achievement. It proves that the innovative work that the museum’s team has put in to create exhibitions and organising educational and artistically enriching events has been recognised in Europe,’ said RSU Rector, Professor Aigars Pētersons. The museum’s collection consists of a teaching collection, which was created in the 1920s and 1930s at the Anatomical Theatre. Since opening in June 2021, more than 22,000 visitors, among them students, researchers, schoolchildren, and families from Latvia and abroad, have explored the reconstructed interactive exhibition. The exhibition has been created by the RSU Anatomy Museum team in collaboration with DD Studio, a company with experience in the museum field. The contents of the interactive and digital solutions of the exhibition were created in collaboration with Anatomy Next.
The RSU Anatomy Museum has so far been successful in developing interdisciplinary projects, attracting both local and foreign artists and researchers. This year, the museum has collaborated with composer and pianist Platons Buravickis, British ceramicist Paddy Hartley, and others. The Anatomy Museum has also outlined its creative plans for next year: there will be an exhibition on perceptual illusions, a sketching and music festival called saMAŅA: Anatomija, an anatomy embroidery workshop called Adatomija, and other events. Next year, the museum's exhibition will be enriched by 35 historical exhibits from the 18th and 19th centuries from the collection of Professor Arthur von Hochstetter in Basel.
This autumn, the Anatomy Museum received the RSU Structural Unit of the Year Award.
