Dean of Faculty of Dentistry Professor I. Urtāne presented Honorary Doctorate degree

The Latvian Academy of Sciences has awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree to Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Professor Ilga Urtāne for significant and noteworthy contribution to the promotion of dental education and research. 

Professor Ilga Urtāne is chairperson of the Board of the RSU Institute of Stomatology, professor at the Department of Orthodontics and a member of the Latvian Orthodontic Association, Latvian Dentist Association, Baltic Orthodontic Association, European Orthodontic Society, World Federation of Orthodontists and the American Association of Orthodontists. Professor Urtāne cooperates with British, Finnish and Boston university clinics, she is Honorary Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and University of Wales College of Medicine and head of the examination group for the Baltic countries.  

Following the restoration of independence, over the course over 20 years professor Ilga Urtāne has persistently invested her energy and talent in the renewal of the RSU Institute of Stomatology at all levels. The Institute of Stomatology possesses a modern technical base for radiological and visual examinations that is also widely applied for research. There is close cooperation with foreign and national universities. 

Professor I. Urtāne is the author and co-author of many scientific publications and she has participated in a number of international projects and local projects organised by the Ministry of Education and Science. She is an expert of the Latvian Council of Science, a regular speaker at international and domestic scientific conferences and workshops. She frequently participates in various clinical training courses to implement the best international practice and the latest methods at the RSU Dental Clinic and the Institute of Stomatology. 

Ilga Urtāne has supervised nine doctoral theses. In her role as chair of the board of SIA RSU Stomatoloģijas institūts and simultaneously taking the position of Dean of RSU Faculty of Dentistry, Professor Urtāne has attained a unity of pedagogic, clinical and research work that is a vital prerequisite in higher education. Prof. Ilga Urtāne has more than 20 years of practical experience in orthodontics.
