International Anatomy Olympiad 2022 Results

On 19 and 20 May, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) hosted the International Anatomy Olympiad. Many 1st-year students from the Faculty of Medicine participated. This year's theme was Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective from the novels and stories created by Scottish writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

After a two-year break, the Olympiad could be held in person again and took place at the RSU Institute of Anatomy and Anthropology. Nine student teams from RSU participated.

Students had an opportunity to test their theoretical and practical knowledge of anatomy by completing exciting and interesting tasks.

At the opening event, teams presented their homework on eye diseases, because Sir Arthur Conan Doyle studied ophthalmology alongside his writing career. Students then had to take a theoretical test and perform 10 practical tasks that included recognising structures on a cadaver, naming the skull bones of a newborn baby, characterising structural pathologies, analysing computed tomography, and much more. At the end of the first day the students visited the RSU Anatomy Museum.

On the second day, students were given another 10 practical tasks – they had to identify bones by touch, describe intubation and caesarean section procedures using anatomical terms, and other tasks. The day concluded with the award ceremony.

The participants describe the event as eventful and appreciated being able to get to know other students. They also appreciated being able to learn new anatomical knowledge and strengthen what they already knew.
