World Society for Virology conference at RSU will address viruses, vaccines and the Covid-19 pandemic
The second World Society for Virology conference will take place on 15-17 June 2023 at Rīga Stradiņš University. The conference will bring together experts from 26 countries and five continents.
During the three-day conference, nearly 100 of the world's leading virologists will discuss human, animal and plant viruses in 12 thematic sessions. Special attention will be devoted to matters related to the Covid-19 pandemic and the latest laboratory technologies.
‘The conference is a significant global scientific event where leading virologists can share their latest research findings, launch collaborative projects and make new contacts.
We are honoured to host these experts at our university,’ says Modra Murovska, Associate Professor at RSU, Co-Chair of the conference, and a member of the Council of the World Society for Virology.
‘Virology has received increased attention worldwide after the Covid-19 pandemic. The research conducted by virologists from our University also holds an important place in research at RSU.
We can particularly highlight the research on autoimmune diseases, central nervous system diseases and various multifactorial diseases associated with viral infections.’
The conference features special symposia on the threat of pandemic viruses, as well as sessions on different branches of virology, human, animal and plant viruses, both in clinical and applied virology and fundamental science. The One Health approach, which is an integrated, unifying approach to balancing and optimising human, animal and environmental health, is also highlighted. This approach explores how to prevent, predict, detect and respond to global health threats, such as the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the conference, researchers will address issues related to influenza and coronaviruses, flaviviruses, herpesviruses, etc., as well as the diagnosis of viral infections. Current developments in the study of animal and plant viruses will also be discussed. A large part of the conference agenda will be devoted to the issues of the Covid-19 pandemic and vaccines. An important lecture on the 100-day mission to fight future pandemics will be delivered by Arun Kumar from the Norwegian Coalition for Epidemics Preparedness Innovations.
