RSU and Ministry of the Interior discuss cooperation in military medicine

On Friday, 13 December, a delegation from the Ministry of the Interior (MoI), led by State Secretary Dimitrijs Trofimovs, visited Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU). During the meeting with RSU Rector Prof. Aigars Pētersons, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Assoc. Prof. Dins Šmits, Vice-Rector for Health Studies Assoc. Prof. Andris Skride, and other RSU representatives, the delegation discussed cooperation in the field of military medicine education.
At the meeting, RSU Rector Prof. Pētersons said: ‘We were the first in the Baltic States to introduce simulations into everyday studies, which are now integrated into nearly all study programmes in medicine, dentistry, and social sciences.
Given our experience, we are ready to develop a military medicine education programme not only for our students, but also for individuals with and without a medical background at the postgraduate level.
The programme could be targeted at firefighters, rescue workers, police officers, social workers, the National Guard, and other services or institutions.’
During the visit, Director of the RSU Medical Education Technology Centre (METC) Ieva Šlēziņa discussed the METC's involvement in various international military exercises. Assoc. Prof. Karina Palkova, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, then outlined new opportunities for cooperation within the framework of the Internal Security Academy. Assoc. Prof. Vladimirs Voicehovskis, Head of the Military Medicine Lecturer Group, spoke about the implementation of the Military Medicine Fundamentals course.
State Secretary Dimitrijs rofimovs praised RSU's achievements in the field of military medicine and supported the need to promote cooperation by introducing training based on international standards for representatives of various fields. MoI representatives also shared their experiences of different services in the field of military medicine.
The meeting concluded with a tour of the METC's simulation facilities.
