‘Artificial intelligence platforms and their applications in the study process, research, and the development of new technologies have become an integral part of our reality. The establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Centre serves as a bridge for collaboration—where science meets technology to jointly foster new ideas. These ideas will be transformed into innovations that drive the modern development of both industry and society,’ emphasised Prof. Aigars Pētersons, Chair of the Board of the Latvian Association of Universities and Rector of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), during the inauguration of the Artificial Intelligence Centre.

At the event, the significance of the new centre was also underscored by Inga Bērziņa, Minister for Smart Administration and Regional Development, Signe Bāliņa, President of the Latvian Information and Communication Technology Association (LIKTA), and other experts. Attendees also viewed a video address from Prime Minister Evika Siliņa.

The new Artificial Intelligence Centre is being established as a foundation, with founding members including the Latvian Association of Universities, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM), the Ministry of Economics, the Ministry of Defence, and LIKTA. The centre’s goal is to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and support the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives. It will contribute to enhancing public AI literacy, promoting equity in the field, and ensuring the ethical, responsible, and safe use of AI technologies in line with fundamental human rights. Additionally, the centre will take measures to mitigate risks associated with the use of AI.

RSU is already making active use of the opportunities provided by AI. This September, the university will launch two new master’s degree programmes: Digital Strategy and Artificial Intelligence Management and Digital Health. RSU has also developed institutional AI guidelines for higher education. Furthermore, student feedback on completed courses and programmes is analysed using AI tools.
